Baker, a private in the British army during the 1880s, finds himself in the middle of Barash while it is under siege by Mahdi forces. Finding a boat to escape, he brings fellow soldier Murchison, a governess, and the daughter of an emir with him. Traveling down the treacherous Nile River to Khartoum, the foursome encounter wild animals, dangerous traders, and menacing tribesmen.
