Left over from Cold War nuclear weapons production are a hundred million gallons of highly radioactive sludge on thousands of acres of radioactive land. Nuclear power produces its own stockpiles of spent fuel. What should we do with it? Leave it where it is in rotting barrels and shallow ditches? Rocket it into the sun with the risk of a failed launch? Bury it in hopes it does not escape and endanger future societies? "Containment" mixes the daily work necessary to handle this waste with animated excursions into a dangerous future. Part animation, part on-site filming in the underground nuclear waste tunnels of New Mexico and in the radioactive surround of Fukushima, the film tacks back and forth between our very real present and an imagined, trouble deep future.
