Kubo mesmerizes the people in his village with his magical gift for spinning wild tales with origami, and a storytelling talent he inherited from his mother who explains his missing eye by saying the Moon King stole it because he was jealous of Kubo's power. Accidentally staying out past sunset one evening, despite his mother's warnings the Moon King will come for him again, Kubo discovers there is truth in every tale, and finds himself on a quest to protect himself from the vengeful spirit alongside two totems come to life: the monkey his mother carved for him, and a samurai named Beetle.
