This documentary, the first about Brexit, chronicles the aftermath of the historic referendum that initiated the United Kingdom's secession from the European Union, and explores the zeitgeist of a nation swept by populism and the perceived threats of globalization, technocratic control, and immigration. With commentary by Noam Chomsky, Saskia Sassen, Guy Standing, as well as interviews with the voters themselves, this film constructs an expose of the critical trend of separation, and the many conflicts that resurfaced at alarming pace surrounding the referendum. The rise of nationalism, anti-elite sentiments, and identity politics cast a dominant shadow over the impending unraveling of the technocratic union. The film reflects on how previous ideologies shifted into dichotomies of class warfare. It explores the stories of individuals who motivated the historic and perplexing vote, a vote that speaks volumes about waning empires and the shrinking power of labor in an increasingly automated global economy. Brexitannia is a portrait of a democracy in a state of panic.
