Few places on earth have inspired more admiration than the Alhambra, Spain's most visited monument. This architectural masterpiece, started during the Moor's conquest of Spain, contains a dazzling series of lace-like courtyards -- in fact water gardens embellished by elegant hedges and plantings -- as well as the gardens of the Generalife. Outside the fortress walls of the Alhambra, these "Gardens of the Architect" have wonderful symmetrical beds of flowering plants framed by the romantic architecture of the Moors.
