The XIX Olympic Winter Games Salt Lake City 2002 took place less than six months after the destruction of the World Trade Center. Greenspan loves to present the backstories of the athletes, showing that the Olympic Games set the bar of achievement to such a near-mythical level that winning or losing a medal can arouse emotions far beyond those in other competitions. When Athens could finally welcome the Olympic Games back for the first time in more than a century, Greenspan decided to take a more selective approach to chronicling the 2004 Games, focusing only on five other disciplines and sports apart from the staple track and field: swimming, softball, fencing, cycling, and weight lifting. He does thoroughly cover the elegant Opening Cermony, which recreates images and figures of ancient Greece, while continuing to give priority to individual competitors. The victory of Xiang Liu in the men's 110-meter hurdles, the first-ever Chinese track-and-field triumph at the Olympic Games, was a harbinger of the hundred medals to come to Chinese athletes in Beijing in 2008.
