Through scheming and outright theft, Eugenides has become King of Attolia, a king despised by his court, and apparently by his bride. On a whim, he has ensnared a naïve young guard in the web of intrigue that surrounds him. Struggling to find his footing, the guard, Costis, knows he's a pawn.
