The author opens with advice on making a list of what a gardener would want and need, and he includes a helpful checklist. With 120 color photographs and illustrations and 100 black-and-white drawings, Newbury gives detailed information on every aspect of garden design: elements (walls, patios, steps, fences, trellises, screens, hedges, pergolas, etc.), shapes and proportion, privacy, focal points, problem areas, and 'quick and easy transformations' (modification of features already in the garden or adding one or two extra features to an existing layout). A final section, a selection of designs, contains color drawings and a list of suggested plants for low-cost and starter gardens, low-maintenance gardens, formal gardens, plant lover's gardens, and family gardens. This is a valuable guide, but most of the designs would require a larger than average plot.
