Acknowledgments -- "Forward" -- Preface -- Introduction -- I. From Birth to Beatle: Mama don't go. Daddy come home. MOTHER -- I was raised in Liverpool, but grew up in Hamburg. JOHN -- II. Taking Off: When I was younger, so much younger than today, I never needed anybody's help in any way. And now these days are gone, I'm not so self-assured, Now I find I've changed my mind, I've opened up the doors. HELP! -- When I was a Beatle I thought we were the best fucking group in the goddamn world, and believing that is what made us what we were. JOHN -- Work is life, you know, and without it, there's nothing but fear and insecurity. JOHN -
My defenses were so great. The cocky rock and roll hero who knows all the answers was actually a terrified guy who didn't know how to cry. Simple. JOHN -- III. Trouble at the Top: I read the news today, oh boy, About a lucky man who made the grade. And though the news was rather sad, Well, I just had to laugh. A DAY IN THE LIFE -- IV. Enter Yoko: I'm in love for the first time, Don't you know it's going to last. It's a love that lasts forever, It's a love that has no past. DON'T LET ME DOWN -- Anybody who knows our history knows that we went through all hell together-through miscarriages and terrible times. JOHN -
V. 1969: Talking in our beds for a week The news people said, "Say, whatcha doin' in bed?" I said, "We're only tryin' to get us some peace." THE BALLAD OF JOHN AND YOKO -- Rituals are important. Nowadays it's hip not to be married. I'm not interested in being hip. JOHN -- VI. The Dream Is Over: The dream is over, yesterday I was the dream weaver, but now I'm reborn. I was the walrus, but now I'm John, And so, dear friends, you'll just have to carry on. GOD -- We haven't been apart for more than one hour in two years. Everything we do is together, and that's what gives us strength. JOHN -- 'Imagine' crystallized John's dream. It crystallized his idealism. It was something he really wanted to say to the world. YOKO -
I've had the boyhood thing of being Elvis. Now I want to be with my best friend, and my best friend's my wife. Who could ask for anything more? JOHN -- Nothing will stop me, and whether I'm here or wherever I may be, I'll always have the same feelings [and] I'll say what I feel. JOHN -- The worst was being separated from Yoko and realizing that I literally could not survive without her. JOHN -- VII. Househusband: When I say that I'm okay, They look at me kind of strange Surely you're not happy now, You no longer play the game. WATCHING THE WHEELS -- The most important thing in my father's life? World peace. Me and my brother. My mom. SEAN -- I don't buy that bit about quality [time] over quantity [time]-that an hour a week of intense rolling around together is better than twenty minutes every day of just being yourself around him....JOHN -
Around me he was just a father. I just loved being with him. If we went to stare at a wall I would be happy...just his presence was all I needed. SEAN -- VIII. Starting Over: Our life together is so precious together, We have grown-we have grown. Although our love is still special, Let's take a chance and fly away somewhere alone. STARTING OVER -- I'm trying to go back and enjoy it, as I enjoyed it originally. And it's working. JOHN -- He was my husband. He was my lover. He was my friend. He was my partner. And he was an old soldier who fought with me. YOKO -- Maybe we were naive, but still we were very honest about everything we did. YOKO -- My role in society, or any artist or poet's role, is to try and express what we feel. Not to tell people how to feel. Not as a preacher, not as a leader, but as a reflection of us all. JOHN -- Imagine there's no Heaven It's easy if you try No Hell below us Above us only sky Imagine all the people Living for today Imagine there's no countries It isn't hard to do Nothing to kill or die for And no religion too Imagine all the people Living life in peace You may say I'm a dreamer But I'm not the only one I hope someday you'll join us And the world will live as one Imagine no possessions I wonder if you can No need for greed or hunger A brotherhood of man Imagine all the people Sharing all the world You may say I'm a dreamer But I'm not the only one I hope someday you'll join us And the world will live as one.
