James Gilmore (1838-1908) was in Armagh, Ireland, the son of Patrick Gilmore (1810-1894) and Mary Boyle Gilmore. Patrick immigrated to Quebec, Canada, in 1839, and James joined him there in 1844. The family immigrated to Illinois in 1854. James Gilmore headed west to seek his fortune in 1859. He worked in Denver for a man named Guiraud and became known as Jimmie Guiraud. After spending time in the gold fields of Montana, Idaho, and Nevada, he adopted the name, James Hogle. He first lived in Salt Lake City, Utah, 1864, and settled there in 1871. He married Ida Elizabeth King, daughter of Charles H. and Elizabeth King in 1873, in Salt Lake City. They had a son, James Albert Hogle (1876-1955). James Albert married Mary Cecilla Copley, daughter of Josiah Copley (1836-1916) in 1910. They had three children.
James Hogle's father, Patrick, and his brothers, who moved west, also adopted the name Hogle. Family members, who remained in Illinois, retained the name Gilmore.
