During a time when discovering a transcontinental railway route through the Rocky Mountains was politically expedient for antislavery forces, John C. Fremont's final expedition was undertaken starting from Kansas Territory to survey the 38th parallel. The expedition having ended in Utah, the daguerrotype photographs taken by expedition photographer Solomon Carvallo were later lost in a fire. Now photographer and author Robert Shlaler has traveled Fremont and Carvallo's route and recreated their lost daguerreotypes.
