Every beginning photography class hears the same warning: Don't photography babies or cats! But somehow, throughout history, serious photographers did take pictures of cats. Some pretty good ones, at that, such as these black-and-white photos by such greats as Edward Weston, Stieglitz, Cartier-Bresson, Atget, and Walker Evans; a smattering of photojournalists; and several "unknowns". The variety of style and treatment is great; in fact, the only thing they all have in common is that somewhere in each of them is a cat. Some are extremely posed - a cat in sunglasses, for example, or a cat pushing another cat in a stroller. Others capture the animals unaware. The most striking of all, however, just happen to have a cat in them; the cat's presence doesn't seem to be the real subject matter
Just a sly coincidence. Of course, cat lovers will enjoy the book, but so will students of photography.
