Describes key battles fought by the Union Army, and the effect they had on the outcome of the Civil War. The border states of Kentucky and Missouri were an early focus of the politicians and generals of both the Union and the Confederacy, as each side wanted the support of those key states. The war in the West differed from that in the East -- Western commanders had to move troops over greater distances, and the armies were generally smaller in the West. For the soldiers, much of the action consisted of control of railroads and rivers, especially the Mississippi River, to transport troops and supplies.
