No matter where we go, artists are captivated by breathtaking sights that would make excellent landscape subjects. It may be a ray of light streaming down between city skyscrapers, white, puffy clouds drifting across a cornfield vista, or the dazzling color of the flowers in our own backyard. All these things touch our hearts and engage our creativity. Yet when we set out to paint these subjects, we're faced with many challenges -- can we improve the design somehow, are the values correct
And can we mix the perfect colors to capture the mood we're after? These and other universal issues associated with expressing the visual language of the landscape, prompted us to compile this book. We began by contacting a group of the finest landscape artists we know. Then we asked each one to explain some aspect of landscape painting that they particularly enjoy, everything from design to color to detail. Along the way, we asked Betsy Dillard Stroud to put the genre of landscape.
